the erythrocyte catalase enzyme activity in iranian osteoporotic women
Authors
abstract
osteoporosis is a disease of high prevalence with increased bone loss. it has potential public health threat and that the health authorities had taken several measures for its control. in recent years, considerable attention has been given to physiopathology of osteoporosis. oxidative stress has been proved to be involved in bone resorption. oxidative stress occurs when balance between oxidants and biochemical antioxidants is disrupted because of excess reactive oxygen species. thus, we measured catalase activity, as one of the marker of stress oxidative, in 138 women. participants were selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria from those who were referred to jamie clinic in tehran for bmd evaluation. catalase antioxidant activity was 262.01±44.70 k/ghb in the group of subjects with osteoporosis in comparison with the group of healthy subjects, 273.77±46.92 k/ghb. the results show that catalase activity in patients with bone deficiency was less than in the control group, though it was not significant. this difference was more between control and patients group with more acute disease (t score -1.7) than patients group with milder disease (t score

full textAlternation in Erythrocyte Enzyme Antioxidant Activity during Blood Storage
Background: Blood is permanently exposed to oxidation stress and therefore has a high antioxidants capacity. Many different factors increasing the demand for the antioxidant capacity can be observed in the stored blood of donors. Consequently, damage to erythrocytes by free radicals may occur. So it is useful to control the alternation of anti-oxidant enzymes in stored blood at different days o...
full textThe Effect of Estrogen Replacement Therapy on Paraoxonase, Erythrocyte Catalase and Erythrocyte Mda in Postmenopausal Women
Objective: Antioxidant and protective effect of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol for atherosclerosis is well known. The decrease of HDL concentration in postmenopausal women can be a reason for increased coronary artery disease due to atherosclerosis. The paraoxonase (PON) enzyme in blood is related with the antioxidant effect of HDL. Catalase (CAT), besides superoxide dismutase and g...
full textA gasometric method to determine erythrocyte catalase activity.
We describe a new gasometric method to determine erythrocyte catalase activity by the measurement of the volume of oxygen produced as a result of hydrogen peroxide decomposition in a system where enzyme and substrate are separated in a special reaction test tube connected to a manometer and the reagents are mixed with a motor-driven stirrer. The position of the reagents in the test tube permits...

full textLow erythrocyte catalase enzyme activity is correlated with high serum total homocysteine levels in tunisian patients with acute myocardial infarction
BACKGROUND An imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidant systems has been suggested to be implicated in the physiopathology of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity in Tunisian patients and to assess the possible relationship between erythrocyte catalase enzyme activity and hyperhomocysteinaemia. METHODS 108 patients with AMI and 81 healthy subje...
